Broken Dishes quilt pattern

8" blocks of sixteen 2" half-square triangles, in scrappy darks on cream, set side by side.

The queen size is 88" × 112" with 130 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

Cutting

  • Background: Cut 20 strips 2⅞" × WOF. Subcut 280 squares 2⅞" for the half-square triangles.
  • Main, from each of the 3 fabrics: Cut 4 strips 2⅞" × WOF. Subcut 56 squares 2⅞" for the half-square triangles.
  • Main, Border: Cut 4 strips 2⅞" × WOF. Subcut 56 squares 2⅞" for the half-square triangles. Cut 5 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 56½" and 2 at 48½".
  • Main, Binding: Cut 4 strips 2⅞" × WOF. Subcut 56 squares 2⅞" for the half-square triangles. Cut 6 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 236" strip.

Putting it together

  1. Make 35 Broken Dishes blocks, 8" finished (8½" with seam allowance). That takes 560 half-square triangles.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 7 rows of 5. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (56" × 72"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  1. Make 56 Broken Dishes blocks, 8" finished (8½" with seam allowance). That takes 896 half-square triangles.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 8 rows of 7. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (72" × 80"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
