Barn quilt patterns
A barn quilt is one quilt block painted on a square board and hung on a barn, a shed or a house. These 39 barn quilt squares are traditional quilt blocks drawn with straight lines, so every one can be laid out with a tape measure and a straightedge.
Each pattern has the marks to measure along the edges of a 2 × 2, 4 × 4 or 8 × 8 ft board, a numbered layout, and how much paint each color takes. Start with how to make a barn quilt, and read where the tradition comes from in barn quilt meaning.

Barn quilt sizes
Most barn quilts are 2, 4 or 8 feet square. A 4 × 4 ft board is cut from half a sheet of plywood and suits a house, garage or small barn; an 8 × 8 ft board is two full sheets joined on the back and is the size that reads from the road on a big barn.
| Board | Front | Primer, both sides | Plywood |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 × 2 ft | 4 sq ft | 8 sq ft | An eighth of a sheet |
| 4 × 4 ft | 16 sq ft | 32 sq ft | Half a 4 × 8 ft sheet |
| 8 × 8 ft | 64 sq ft | 128 sq ft | Two 4 × 8 ft sheets |
