Flying Geese quilt pattern

8" blocks of eight flying geese, each goose 4" × 2", set so the geese fly up the quilt in long columns.

The queen size is 94" × 110" with 143 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

  • Main, Binding: Cut 5 strips 4½" × WOF. Subcut 72 rectangles 2½" × 4½" for the flying geese. Cut 6 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 228" strip.
  • Background: Cut 35 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 560 squares 2½" for the flying geese.
  • Main, from each of the 4 fabrics: Gold tonal: Cut 3 strips 4½" × WOF. Subcut 48 rectangles 2½" × 4½" for the flying geese. Sage leaf: Cut 3 strips 4½" × WOF.   • Main, Border: Cut 2 strips 4½" × WOF. Subcut 32 rectangles 2½" × 4½" for the flying geese. Cut 5 strips 3½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 56½" and 2 at 46½".

Putting it together

  1. Make 35 Flying Geese blocks, 8" finished (8½" with seam allowance). That takes 280 flying geese.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 7 rows of 5. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 3" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (54" × 70"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  1. Make 56 Flying Geese blocks, 8" finished (8½" with seam allowance). That takes 448 flying geese.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 8 rows of 7. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 3" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (70" × 78"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  4. Layer the backing (78" × 102"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

Making the Flying Geese quilt from precuts

The scrappy prints can come from jelly rolls, layer cakes, charm packs or fat quarters. Everything else, borders and binding included, comes from the yardage in the fabric list for each size.
