Logs added to opposite sides of the center in turn, light above and below and dark at the sides. Four rounds, each log a tenth of the block wide.

The Courthouse Steps is pieced on a 10 × 10 grid, so a 12½" block has 1¼" grid squares.

How to sew a 12½" Courthouse Steps block

  1. Sew a light log to the top and bottom of the 3" center square and press away from the center.

  2. Sew dark logs to both sides, then light logs above and below again, each as long as the edge it covers: 3", 5½", 5½", 8", 8", 10½", 10½", 13".

  3. Keep going for four rounds. The block measures 12½" finished, 13" with seam allowance.
