Courthouse Steps quilt pattern

10" blocks with logs added to opposite sides of a 2" center in turn, light above and below, dark at the sides. Set side by side, the darks make hourglass shapes.

The queen size is 88" × 108" with 80 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

  • Background, from each of the 5 fabrics: Cut 5 strips 1½" × WOF. Subcut logs: 8 at 2½", 8 at 4½", 8 at 6½", 8 at 8½".
  • Main, from each of the 3 fabrics: Cut 8 strips 1½" × WOF. Subcut logs: 10 at 4½", 10 at 6½", 10 at 8½", 10 at 10½".
  • Main, Border: Cut 8 strips 1½" × WOF. Subcut logs: 10 at 4½", 10 at 6½", 10 at 8½", 10 at 10½". Cut 5 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 50½" and 2 at 48½".

Putting it together

  1. Make 20 Courthouse Steps blocks, 10" finished (10½" with seam allowance). That takes 20 Courthouse Steps blocks.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 5 rows of 4. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (56" × 66"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
