Barn Raising log cabin quilt pattern

7½" log cabin blocks with ¾" logs, turned so rings of light and dark spread out from the center of the quilt. Barn Raising needs an even number of blocks across and down.

The queen size is 98" × 113" with 168 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

  • Dark logs, Border: Cut 13 strips 1¼" × WOF. Subcut logs: 12 at 2¾", 12 at 3½", 12 at 4¼", 12 at 5", 12 at 5¾", 12 at 6½", 12 at 7¼", 12 at 8". Cut 6 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 60½" and 2 at 53½".
  • Dark logs, from each of the 3 fabrics: Cut 13 strips 1¼" × WOF. Subcut logs: 12 at 2¾", 12 at 3½", 12 at 4¼", 12 at 5", 12 at 5¾", 12 at 6½", 12 at 7¼", 12 at 8".

Putting it together

  1. Make 48 Log Cabin blocks, 7½" finished (8" with seam allowance). That takes 48 Log Cabin blocks.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 8 rows of 6, turned as shown for the Barn Raising setting. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (61" × 76"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  1. Make 80 Log Cabin blocks, 7½" finished (8" with seam allowance). That takes 80 Log Cabin blocks.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 10 rows of 8, turned as shown for the Barn Raising setting. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (76" × 91"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
