Spool quilt block

A thread-colored center between two spool ends. Each end is a rectangle with stitch-and-flip corners, so the block needs no templates.

The Spool is pieced on a 3 × 3 grid, so a 12" block has 4" grid squares.

Also called Spools.

How to sew a 12" Spool block

Spool block laid out in its units before sewing
  1. Make 2 units, 12" × 4" finished. Sew a 4½" background square corner to corner across each end of a 12½" × 4½" main rectangle, trim ¼" past the seams and press.

  2. Lay out the units as drawn and sew them into 3 rows. Press the seams of each row the opposite way from the one before so they nest, then sew the rows together. The block measures 12" finished, 12½" with seam allowance.
