Card Trick quilt pattern

9" Card Trick blocks of half-square and quarter-square triangles, set with 2" sashing so each block reads as four overlapping cards.

The queen size is 87" × 109" with 63 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

  • Background: Cut 3 strips 3⅞" × WOF. Subcut 30 squares 3⅞" for the half-square triangles. Cut 2 strips 4¼" × WOF. Subcut 15 squares 4¼" for the quarter-square triangles.
  • Main, Binding: Cut 3 strips 3⅞" × WOF. Subcut 30 squares 3⅞" for the half-square triangles. Cut 2 strips 4¼" × WOF. Subcut 15 squares 4¼" for the quarter-square triangles. Cut 6 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 228" strip.
  • Centers, Border: Cut 2 strips 4¼" × WOF. Subcut 15 squares 4¼" for the quarter-square triangles. Cut 3 strips 3⅞" × WOF. Subcut 30 squares 3⅞" for the half-square triangles. Cut 5 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 57½" and 2 at 43½".
  • Sashing: Cut 3 strips 9½" × WOF. Subcut 38 strips 2½" × 9½".
  • Cornerstones: Cut 2 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 24 squares 2½".

Putting it together

  1. Make 15 Card Trick blocks, 9" finished (9½" with seam allowance). That takes 30 half-square triangles, 30 quarter-square triangle units, 30 half-square triangles, 30 quarter-square triangle units and 15 quarter-square triangle units.
  2. Sew 5 rows of 3 blocks with a sashing strip between the blocks and at both ends. Sew 6 sashing rows of 3 strips and 4 cornerstones. Join the rows, starting and ending with a sashing row.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (51" × 73"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  2. Sew 6 rows of 5 blocks with a sashing strip between the blocks and at both ends. Sew 7 sashing rows of 5 strips and 6 cornerstones. Join the rows, starting and ending with a sashing row.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (73" × 84"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  2. Sew 8 rows of 7 blocks with a sashing strip between the blocks and at both ends. Sew 9 sashing rows of 7 strips and 8 cornerstones. Join the rows, starting and ending with a sashing row.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (95" × 106"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
