Card Trick quilt block

Four cards made of half-square and quarter-square triangles that seem to overlap in the center. Use four fabrics for the cards, or two, as drawn here.

The Card Trick is pieced on a 3 × 3 grid, so a 12" block has 4" grid squares.

How to sew a 12" Card Trick block

Card Trick block laid out in its units before sewing
  1. Make 2 half-square triangles, 4" finished. Pair a 4⅞" background square with a 4⅞" main square right sides together. Draw a line corner to corner, sew ¼" on both sides of it, cut on the line and press. Each pair makes 2.

  2. Make 2 units of one half-square triangle and two quarter-square triangles, 4" finished. Cut 4⅞" squares once on the diagonal for the large triangles and 5¼" squares twice on the diagonal for the small ones. Sew two small triangles together along a short side, then sew them to a large triangle.

  3. Make 2 half-square triangles, 4" finished. Pair a 4⅞" background square with a 4⅞" accent square right sides together. Draw a line corner to corner, sew ¼" on both sides of it, cut on the line and press. Each pair makes 2.

  5. Make 1 hourglass unit, 4" finished. Make two half-square triangles from a 5¼" main square and a 5¼" accent square. Lay them right sides together with opposite colors facing and the seams nested, draw a line across the seam, sew ¼" on both sides, cut on the line and press. Each pair of squares makes 2.

  6. Lay out the units as drawn and sew them into 3 rows. Press the seams of each row the opposite way from the one before so they nest, then sew the rows together. The block measures 12" finished, 12½" with seam allowance.
