Jacob's Ladder quilt block

Five four-patches and four large half-square triangles on a nine-patch layout. The small dark squares form chains that run corner to corner across the quilt.

The Jacob's Ladder is pieced on a 6 × 6 grid, so a 12" block has 2" grid squares.

Also called Underground Railroad and Wagon Tracks.

How to sew a 12" Jacob's Ladder block

Jacob's Ladder block laid out in its units before sewing
  1. Make 4 half-square triangles, 4" finished. Pair a 4⅞" main square with a 4⅞" background square right sides together. Draw a line corner to corner, sew ¼" on both sides of it, cut on the line and press. Each pair makes 2.

  2. Lay out the units as drawn and sew them into 3 rows. Press the seams of each row the opposite way from the one before so they nest, then sew the rows together. The block measures 12" finished, 12½" with seam allowance.
