Jacob's Ladder quilt pattern

12" Jacob's Ladder blocks of four-patches and large half-square triangles, set side by side so the small squares chain across the quilt.

The queen size is 92" × 104" with 56 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

Cutting

  • Background: Cut 8 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 120 squares 2½". Cut 3 strips 4⅞" × WOF. Subcut 24 squares 4⅞" for the half-square triangles.
  • Main, Border: Cut 8 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 120 squares 2½". Cut 3 strips 4⅞" × WOF. Subcut 24 squares 4⅞" for the half-square triangles. Cut 5 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 48½" and 2 at 44½".
  • Binding: Cut 6 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 212" strip.

Putting it together

  1. Make 12 Jacob's Ladder blocks, 12" finished (12½" with seam allowance). That takes 48 half-square triangles.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 4 rows of 3. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (52" × 64"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  • Binding: Cut 7 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 260" strip.

Putting it together

  1. Make 20 Jacob's Ladder blocks, 12" finished (12½" with seam allowance). That takes 80 half-square triangles.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 5 rows of 4. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (64" × 76"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
