Disappearing Nine Patch quilt pattern

Nine-patches of 5" squares cut into quarters, turned and sewn back together into 13" blocks. Every other block is turned a quarter turn.

The queen size is 84" × 110" with 48 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

Cutting

  • Main, Border: Cut 2 strips 5" × WOF. Subcut 16 squares 5" for the nine-patch corners. Cut 5 strips 3½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 52½" and 2 at 45½".
  • Background: Cut 6 strips 5" × WOF. Subcut 48 squares 5" for the nine-patch sides.
  • Centers: Cut 2 strips 5" × WOF. Subcut 12 squares 5" for the nine-patch centers.
  • Main, from each of the 4 fabrics: Lime stripe: Cut 1 strips 5" × WOF. Subcut 8 squares 5" for the nine-patch corners. Aqua swirl: Cut 1 strips 5" × WOF. Putting it together

  1. Make 12 Disappearing Nine Patch blocks, 13" finished (13½" with seam allowance). That takes 12 Disappearing Nine Patch blocks.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 4 rows of 3, turned as shown. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 3" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (53" × 66"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  2. Lay out the blocks in 5 rows of 4, turned as shown. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 3" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (66" × 79"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  3. Add the 3" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (79" × 92"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  2. Lay out the blocks in 7 rows of 6, turned as shown. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 3" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (92" × 105"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
