Disappearing Nine Patch quilt block
A nine-patch cut in half both ways, with two of the quarters turned around. Nine 5" squares make one 13" block, because the cuts come after the sewing.

How to sew a 13" Disappearing Nine Patch block
Sew the nine 5" squares into a nine-patch: corners and center in their own fabrics, sides in the side fabric. It measures 14" square.
Cut the nine-patch in half through the center both ways, making four quarters.
Turn the top-right and bottom-left quarters around, so their big squares sit next to the center, and sew the four quarters back together. The block measures 13" finished, 13½" with seam allowance.
