Churn Dash quilt block

Four half-square triangles in the corners and four two-strip units on the sides, around a background center. The dark halves sit on the inside of every unit.

The Churn Dash is pieced on a 3 × 3 grid, so a 12" block has 4" grid squares.

Also called Monkey Wrench, Hole in the Barn Door and Sherman's March.

How to sew a 12" Churn Dash block

Churn Dash block laid out in its units before sewing
  1. Make 4 half-square triangles, 4" finished. Pair a 4⅞" background square with a 4⅞" main square right sides together. Draw a line corner to corner, sew ¼" on both sides of it, cut on the line and press. Each pair makes 2.

  2. Make 4 two-strip units, 4" finished. Sew a background rectangle to a main rectangle along the long side and press toward the darker fabric. For many blocks, sew strips first and cut the units from the strip set.

  3. Lay out the units as drawn and sew them into 3 rows. Press the seams of each row the opposite way from the one before so they nest, then sew the rows together. The block measures 12" finished, 12½" with seam allowance.
