Crown of Thorns quilt block

Squares and half-square triangles on a five-by-five grid. The dark pieces make a ring around the center with a crown of points at each corner.

The Crown of Thorns is pieced on a 5 × 5 grid, so a 10" block has 2" grid squares.

Also called Georgetown Circle and Single Wedding Ring.

How to sew a 10" Crown of Thorns block

Crown of Thorns block laid out in its units before sewing
  1. Make 16 half-square triangles, 2" finished. Pair a 2⅞" background square with a 2⅞" main square right sides together. Draw a line corner to corner, sew ¼" on both sides of it, cut on the line and press. Each pair makes 2.

  2. Lay out the units as drawn and sew them into 5 rows. Press the seams of each row the opposite way from the one before so they nest, then sew the rows together. The block measures 10" finished, 10½" with seam allowance.
