Rolling Stone quilt block
Square-in-a-square units in the corners, two-strip units on the sides and a plain center, on a nine-patch grid.
The Rolling Stone is pieced on a 3 × 3 grid, so a 12" block has 4" grid squares.

How to sew a 12" Rolling Stone block

Make 4 stitch-and-flip units, 4" finished. Lay a 2½" main square on each corner of a 4½" background square, sew corner to corner, trim ¼" past the seam and press.

Make 4 two-strip units, 4" finished. Sew a background rectangle to a main rectangle along the long side and press toward the darker fabric. For many blocks, sew strips first and cut the units from the strip set.
Lay out the units as drawn and sew them into 3 rows. Press the seams of each row the opposite way from the one before so they nest, then sew the rows together. The block measures 12" finished, 12½" with seam allowance.
