Grandmother's Choice quilt pattern

10" blocks on a five-by-five grid, with large pieced triangles in the corners and a background cross, set with 2" sashing.

The queen size is 94" × 106" with 56 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

  • Background: Cut 4 strips 2⅞" × WOF. Subcut 48 squares 2⅞" for the half-square triangles. Cut 6 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 96 squares 2½".
  • Sashing, Border: Cut 2 strips 10½" × WOF. Subcut 31 strips 2½" × 10½". Cut 5 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 50½" and 2 at 46½".

Putting it together

  1. Make 12 Grandmother's Choice blocks, 10" finished (10½" with seam allowance). That takes 96 half-square triangles.
  2. Sew 4 rows of 3 blocks with a sashing strip between the blocks and at both ends. Sew 5 sashing rows of 3 strips and 4 cornerstones. Join the rows, starting and ending with a sashing row.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (54" × 66"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

Putting it together

  1. Make 20 Grandmother's Choice blocks, 10" finished (10½" with seam allowance). That takes 160 half-square triangles.
  2. Sew 5 rows of 4 blocks with a sashing strip between the blocks and at both ends. Sew 6 sashing rows of 4 strips and 5 cornerstones. Join the rows, starting and ending with a sashing row.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (66" × 78"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
