Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt pattern

Flowers of seven 1¼" hexagons, a yellow center and six petals, with a white path between them. Pieced by hand over papers or with set-in machine seams.

The queen size is 90" × 108". Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

Cutting

  • Flower centers: Cut 3 strips 2¾" × WOF. Cut 36 hexagons with 1¼" sides.
  • Petals, from each of the 6 fabrics: Coral dots: Cut 2 strips 2¾" × WOF. Cut 27 hexagons with 1¼" sides. Big bloom: Cut 3 strips 2¾" × WOF. Cut 32 hexagons with 1¼" sides. Pink floral: Cut 2 strips 2¾" × WOF. Cut 25 hexagons with 1¼" sides. Sage batik: Cut 2 strips 2¾" × WOF. Cut 22 hexagons with 1¼" sides. Pink batik: Cut 2 strips 2¾" × WOF.   • Petals, Binding: Cut 2 strips 2¾" × WOF. Cut 27 hexagons with 1¼" sides. Cut 6 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 222" strip.
  • Petals, Border: Cut 2 strips 2¾" × WOF. Cut 18 hexagons with 1¼" sides. Cut 5 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 52½" and 2 at 45½".

Putting it together

  1. Baste each hexagon over a paper template, or mark the ¼" seam lines for machine piecing. Sew six petals around each flower center, then join the flowers with the path hexagons.
  2. Trim the edges straight, ¼" past the last full row of hexagons, before adding the border.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (53" × 68"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
