T-shirt quilt pattern

12" t-shirt blocks, each shirt front stabilized with fusible interfacing, set with 2" sashing and cornerstones and a 4" border.

The queen size is 94" × 108" with 42 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

Cutting

  • Sashing, Border: Cut 2 strips 12½" × WOF. Subcut 31 strips 2½" × 12½". Cut 6 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 58½" and 2 at 52½".
  • Cornerstones, Binding: Cut 2 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 20 squares 2½". Cut 6 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 248" strip.

Putting it together

  1. Fuse interfacing to the back of 12 shirt fronts, then cut a 12½" square from each with the design centered.
  2. Sew 4 rows of 3 blocks with a sashing strip between the blocks and at both ends. Sew 5 sashing rows of 3 strips and 4 cornerstones. Join the rows, starting and ending with a sashing row.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (60" × 74"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

Throw T-Shirt quilt, 66" × 66"

Cutting

  • Cornerstones, Binding: Cut 2 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 25 squares 2½". Cut 7 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 276" strip.

Putting it together

  1. Fuse interfacing to the back of 16 shirt fronts, then cut a 12½" square from each with the design centered.
  2. Sew 4 rows of 4 blocks with a sashing strip between the blocks and at both ends. Sew 5 sashing rows of 4 strips and 5 cornerstones. Join the rows, starting and ending with a sashing row.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (74" × 74"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  • Cornerstones, Binding: Cut 3 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 35 squares 2½". Cut 8 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 332" strip.

Putting it together

  1. Fuse interfacing to the back of 24 shirt fronts, then cut a 12½" square from each with the design centered.
  2. Sew 6 rows of 4 blocks with a sashing strip between the blocks and at both ends. Sew 7 sashing rows of 4 strips and 5 cornerstones. Join the rows, starting and ending with a sashing row.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (74" × 102"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (88" × 102"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  2. Sew 7 rows of 6 blocks with a sashing strip between the blocks and at both ends. Sew 8 sashing rows of 6 strips and 7 cornerstones. Join the rows, starting and ending with a sashing row.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (102" × 116"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  2. Sew 7 rows of 7 blocks with a sashing strip between the blocks and at both ends. Sew 8 sashing rows of 7 strips and 8 cornerstones. Join the rows, starting and ending with a sashing row.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (116" × 116"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
