Road to Oklahoma quilt pattern

8" blocks of squares and half-square triangles set side by side, so the squares run in diagonal roads across the quilt.

The queen size is 88" × 112" with 130 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

  • Main, Border: Cut 9 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 140 squares 2½". Cut 5 strips 2⅞" × WOF. Subcut 70 squares 2⅞" for the half-square triangles. Cut 5 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 56½" and 2 at 48½".
  • Background: Cut 5 strips 2⅞" × WOF. Subcut 70 squares 2⅞" for the half-square triangles. Cut 14 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 210 squares 2½".
  • Centers, Binding: Cut 5 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 70 squares 2½". Cut 6 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 236" strip.

Putting it together

  1. Make 35 Road to Oklahoma blocks, 8" finished (8½" with seam allowance). That takes 140 half-square triangles.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 7 rows of 5. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (56" × 72"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  2. Lay out the blocks in 8 rows of 7. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (72" × 80"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
