Scrappy star quilt pattern

8" Sawtooth Stars, each in its own print with a different center, on a cream dot background. A good use for fat quarters and scraps.

The queen size is 88" × 112" with 130 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

  • Centers, from each of the 4 fabrics: Gold tonal: Cut 2 strips 4½" × WOF. Subcut 11 squares 4½" for the centers. Mustard solid: Cut 1 strips 4½" × WOF. Subcut 7 squares 4½" for the centers.   • Star, Border: Cut 2 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 32 squares 2½" for the star points. Cut 5 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 56½" and 2 at 48½".

Putting it together

  1. Make 35 Sawtooth Star blocks, 8" finished (8½" with seam allowance). That takes 140 flying geese.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 7 rows of 5. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (56" × 72"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  1. Make 56 Sawtooth Star blocks, 8" finished (8½" with seam allowance). That takes 224 flying geese.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 8 rows of 7. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (72" × 80"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (80" × 96"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
