Sawtooth Star quilt block
Four flying geese around a center square, with a plain square in each corner. The center is half the width of the block and each goose is a quarter of it tall.
The Sawtooth Star is pieced on a 4 × 4 grid, so a 12" block has 3" grid squares.

How to sew a 12" Sawtooth Star block

Make 4 flying geese, 6" × 3" finished. Lay a 3½" main square on one end of a 6½" × 3½" background rectangle, sew corner to corner, trim ¼" past the seam and press. Repeat on the other end, with the seam running the other way.
Lay out the units as drawn and sew them into 3 rows. Press the seams of each row the opposite way from the one before so they nest, then sew the rows together. The block measures 12" finished, 12½" with seam allowance.
