Rising Star quilt block
A small sawtooth star inside a large one. The small star is half the width of the block and its center is a quarter.
The Rising Star is pieced on a 8 × 8 grid, so a 12" block has 1½" grid squares.
Also called Star Within a Star.

How to sew a 12" Rising Star block

Make 4 flying geese, 6" × 3" finished. Lay a 3½" main square on one end of a 6½" × 3½" background rectangle, sew corner to corner, trim ¼" past the seam and press. Repeat on the other end, with the seam running the other way.

Make 4 flying geese, 3" × 1½" finished. Lay a 2" accent square on one end of a 3½" × 2" main rectangle, sew corner to corner, trim ¼" past the seam and press. Repeat on the other end, with the seam running the other way.
Lay out the units as drawn and sew them into 3 rows. Press the seams of each row the opposite way from the one before so they nest, then sew the rows together. The block measures 12" finished, 12½" with seam allowance.
