King's Crown quilt block

Four flying geese around a center square half the width of the block, with a square in each corner. The geese point out, so the dark fabric makes a square on point.

The King's Crown is pieced on a 4 × 4 grid, so a 12" block has 3" grid squares.

How to sew a 12" King's Crown block

King's Crown block laid out in its units before sewing
  1. Make 4 flying geese, 6" × 3" finished. Lay a 3½" background square on one end of a 6½" × 3½" main rectangle, sew corner to corner, trim ¼" past the seam and press. Repeat on the other end, with the seam running the other way.

  2. Lay out the units as drawn and sew them into 3 rows. Press the seams of each row the opposite way from the one before so they nest, then sew the rows together. The block measures 12" finished, 12½" with seam allowance.

To paint it on a board, the King's Crown barn quilt pattern has the measurements for 2, 4 and 8 ft boards and the paint for each color.
