Ohio Star quilt block

Four hourglass units, four corner squares and a center square on a nine-patch grid. The star points are quarter-square triangles, so the outside edges of the block stay on the straight grain.

The Ohio Star is pieced on a 3 × 3 grid, so a 12" block has 4" grid squares.

Also called Variable Star.

How to sew a 12" Ohio Star block

Ohio Star block laid out in its units before sewing
  1. Make 4 hourglass units, 4" finished. Make two half-square triangles from a 5¼" background square and a 5¼" main square. Lay them right sides together with opposite colors facing and the seams nested, draw a line across the seam, sew ¼" on both sides, cut on the line and press. Each pair of squares makes 2.

  2. Lay out the units as drawn and sew them into 3 rows. Press the seams of each row the opposite way from the one before so they nest, then sew the rows together. The block measures 12" finished, 12½" with seam allowance.
