Union Square quilt block
A center square inside a ring of four flying geese, with more geese, half-square triangles and squares around the outside, on a six-by-six grid.
The Union Square is pieced on a 6 × 6 grid, so a 12" block has 2" grid squares.

How to sew a 12" Union Square block

Make 8 half-square triangles, 2" finished. Pair a 2⅞" background square with a 2⅞" main square right sides together. Draw a line corner to corner, sew ¼" on both sides of it, cut on the line and press. Each pair makes 2.

Make 8 flying geese, 4" × 2" finished. Lay a 2½" main square on one end of a 4½" × 2½" background rectangle, sew corner to corner, trim ¼" past the seam and press. Repeat on the other end, with the seam running the other way.
Lay out the units as drawn and sew them into 5 rows. Press the seams of each row the opposite way from the one before so they nest, then sew the rows together. The block measures 12" finished, 12½" with seam allowance.
