Union Square quilt pattern

12" Union Square blocks: a center square ringed by flying geese and half-square triangles, set side by side with a 4" border.

The queen size is 92" × 104" with 56 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

Cutting

  • Background, Border: Cut 3 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 48 squares 2½". Cut 4 strips 2⅞" × WOF. Subcut 48 squares 2⅞" for the half-square triangles. Cut 6 strips 4½" × WOF. Subcut 96 rectangles 2½" × 4½" for the flying geese. Cut 5 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 48½" and 2 at 44½".
  • Main: Cut 4 strips 2⅞" × WOF. Subcut 48 squares 2⅞" for the half-square triangles. Cut 12 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 192 squares 2½" for the flying geese. Cut 3 strips 2½" × WOF. Subcut 48 squares 2½".
  • Centers, Binding: Cut 2 strips 4½" × WOF. Subcut 12 squares 4½". Cut 6 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 212" strip.

Putting it together

  1. Make 12 Union Square blocks, 12" finished (12½" with seam allowance). That takes 96 half-square triangles and 96 flying geese.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 4 rows of 3. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (52" × 64"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  1. Make 20 Union Square blocks, 12" finished (12½" with seam allowance). That takes 160 half-square triangles and 160 flying geese.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 5 rows of 4. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (64" × 76"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (76" × 100"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
