Lone Star quilt pattern

One eight-pointed star the width of the quilt, each point pieced from 16 diamonds in alternating rings of red and gold, with a 6" border.

The queen size is 90" × 90". Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

Cutting

  • Background: Cut 2 strips 11⅛" × WOF. Subcut 4 squares 11⅛" for the corner squares. Cut 1 strips 16¼" × WOF. Subcut 1 squares 16¼" for the side triangles, cut twice on the diagonal.
  • Main, Binding: Cut 8 strips 2⅜" × WOF. Cut 64 pieces from Lone Star template A. Cut 5 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 204" strip.
  • Centers: Cut 8 strips 2⅜" × WOF. Cut 64 pieces from Lone Star template A.
  • Border: Cut 5 strips 6½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 36½" and 2 at 48½".

Putting it together

  1. Make the Lone Star block, 36" finished (36½" with seam allowance). That takes 1 Lone Star block.
  2. Add the 6" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  3. Layer the backing (56" × 56"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

Cutting

  • Main, Binding: Cut 11 strips 3" × WOF. Cut 64 pieces from Lone Star template A. Cut 6 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 252" strip.
  • Centers: Cut 11 strips 3" × WOF. Cut 64 pieces from Lone Star template A.
  • Border: Cut 6 strips 6½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 48½" and 2 at 60½".

Putting it together

  1. Make the Lone Star block, 48" finished (48½" with seam allowance). That takes 1 Lone Star block.
  2. Add the 6" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  3. Layer the backing (68" × 68"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
