Storm at Sea quilt pattern

12" blocks of square-in-a-square and diamond-in-a-rectangle units with straight seams only. Set side by side, the diamonds look like rolling waves.

The queen size is 92" × 104" with 56 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

  • Centers, Binding: Cut 3 strips 2⅝" × WOF. Subcut 48 squares 2⅝" for the corner diamonds. Cut 2 strips 3" × WOF. Subcut 24 squares 3" for the center triangles, cut once on the diagonal. Cut 6 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 212" strip.
  • Main, Border: Cut 6 strips 2⅜" × WOF. Subcut 96 squares 2⅜" for the corner triangles, cut once on the diagonal. Cut 3 strips 3⅞" × WOF. Subcut 24 squares 3⅞" for the center corners, cut once on the diagonal. Cut 7 strips 3¼" × WOF. Cut 48 pieces from Storm at Sea template B. Cut 5 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 48½" and 2 at 44½".

Putting it together

  1. Make 12 Storm at Sea blocks, 12" finished (12½" with seam allowance). That takes 12 Storm at Sea blocks.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 4 rows of 3. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (52" × 64"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  4. Layer the backing (64" × 76"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
