Bow Tie quilt block

Two dark squares and two light squares, with a small dark square sewn across the inside corner of each light square to make the knot.

The Bow Tie is pieced on a 2 × 2 grid, so a 12" block has 6" grid squares.

Also called Necktie.

How to sew a 12" Bow Tie block

Bow Tie block laid out in its units before sewing
  1. Make 2 stitch-and-flip units, 6" finished. Lay a 3½" main square on the marked corner of a 6½" background square, sew corner to corner, trim ¼" past the seam and press.

  2. Lay out the units as drawn and sew them into 2 rows. Press the seams of each row the opposite way from the one before so they nest, then sew the rows together. The block measures 12" finished, 12½" with seam allowance.
