Economy block quilt pattern

8" Economy blocks: a 4" center, then two rounds of triangles cut from squares. Scrappy centers and first rounds on a cream background.

The queen size is 88" × 112" with 130 blocks. Each size below has its own fabric list, cutting and backing, worked out for 42" fabric with ¼" seams, 10% extra and yardage rounded up to the next ¼ yard.

Cutting

  • Centers, from each of the 4 fabrics: Gold tonal: Cut 2 strips 4½" × WOF. Subcut 11 squares 4½" for the centers. Tan plaid: Cut 1 strips 4½" × WOF. Subcut 7 squares 4½" for the centers. Gold paisley: Cut 2 strips 4½" × WOF. Subcut 10 squares 4½" for the centers. Cream vine: Cut 1 strips 4½" × WOF. Subcut 7 squares 4½" for the centers.
  • Main, Binding: Cut 2 strips 3¾" × WOF. Subcut 22 squares 3¾" for the first triangles, cut once on the diagonal. Cut 6 strips 2½" × WOF. Join into one 236" strip.
  • Background: Cut 9 strips 4⅞" × WOF. Subcut 70 squares 4⅞" for the corner triangles, cut once on the diagonal.
  • Main, from each of the 2 fabrics: Rust paisley: Cut 2 strips 3¾" × WOF. Subcut 14 squares 3¾" for the first triangles, cut once on the diagonal. Sage leaf: Cut 2 strips 3¾" × WOF. Subcut 20 squares 3¾" for the first triangles, cut once on the diagonal.
  • Main, Border: Cut 2 strips 3¾" × WOF. Subcut 14 squares 3¾" for the first triangles, cut once on the diagonal. Cut 5 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 56½" and 2 at 48½".

Putting it together

  1. Make 35 Economy blocks, 8" finished (8½" with seam allowance). That takes 35 Economy blocks.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 7 rows of 5. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (56" × 72"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  • Background: Cut 14 strips 4⅞" × WOF. Subcut 112 squares 4⅞" for the corner triangles, cut once on the diagonal.
  • Main, from each of the 2 fabrics: Rust paisley: Cut 3 strips 3¾" × WOF. Subcut 24 squares 3¾" for the first triangles, cut once on the diagonal. Sage leaf: Cut 3 strips 3¾" × WOF. Subcut 32 squares 3¾" for the first triangles, cut once on the diagonal.
  • Main, Border: Cut 3 strips 3¾" × WOF. Subcut 24 squares 3¾" for the first triangles, cut once on the diagonal. Cut 7 strips 4½" × WOF. Join end to end. Cut 2 at 64½" and 2 at 64½".

Putting it together

  1. Make 56 Economy blocks, 8" finished (8½" with seam allowance). That takes 56 Economy blocks.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 8 rows of 7. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (72" × 80"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  2. Lay out the blocks in 10 rows of 8. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (80" × 96"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.

  1. Make 110 Economy blocks, 8" finished (8½" with seam allowance). That takes 110 Economy blocks.
  2. Lay out the blocks in 11 rows of 10. Sew the rows, pressing the seams in opposite directions from row to row, then join the rows.
  3. Add the 4" border: measure through the middle of the quilt, sew strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom.
  4. Layer the backing (96" × 104"), batting and top, quilt, and trim. Join the binding strips end to end, press them in half lengthwise and sew to the front.
